FAQ'S

The CIT is an official document issued by a doctor that certifies a worker's temporary incapacity to carry out their professional activity due to illness or accident.

The CIT can be issued by doctors from the National Health Service (SNS) or entities with an agreement with the SNS, as well as duly authorized private doctors.

To obtain a CIT, you must consult a doctor who, after clinical assessment, will decide whether it is necessary to issue the certificate based on your health condition.

After receiving the CIT, you must inform your employer and deliver the certificate within a maximum period of five working days. The CIT must also be sent to Social Security, which is usually done automatically by the doctor.

The validity of the CIT is determined by the doctor and can vary from a few days to several weeks, depending on the severity of the health condition. The period of incapacity can be extended if necessary.

No. The CIT certifies that you are unable to work during the specified period. Working during this period may violate the conditions of the certificate and result in penalties.

Sickness benefit is calculated based on your reference earnings and the duration of your disability. The value can vary between 55% and 75% of the reference salary, depending on the duration of the illness and other specific conditions.

If you are still not fit to work when the CIT expires, you should see your doctor again for a new assessment. The doctor may issue a new CIT if he deems it necessary.

Labor legislation protects workers against dismissal due to illness. However, if the period of incapacity is very long, it may be necessary to discuss the situation with the employer and/or consult a lawyer specializing in employment law.

If your employer does not accept the CIT, you should contact Social Security or the Authority for Working Conditions (ACT) for guidance and to ensure that your rights are respected.
